Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and India, which were established on October 1st 1959, have widened, diversified and deepened growing cooperation on political, technical, economic, and scientific areas, since President Hugo Chávez visit to New Delhi, in March 2005. The exchange of high level visits has contributed to strengthen the bilateral relations and contributed to an atmosphere of mutual goodwill and understanding.

Relations between Venezuela and India are based on friendship, cooperation and convergence on several issues at the international and bilateral levels. There is a symmetry between the two governments in their commitment to the pursuit of social justice and fair distribution of welfare. As members of the United Nations, the Group of 15, and the Non – Aligned Countries both countries consistently promote multilateralism, self determination, dignity, and equality among all nations.
